You might remember our recent crowd-funding campaign raising funds to support the planting of a new orchard at Durrington Infant and Junior School near worthing.
Well, we’re delighted to say that we hit our target and this March, alongside our friendly arborist Elliot, we helped students plant 20 new fruit trees – including apple, plum, and cherry trees – on their school grounds. The children had a great time getting their hands dirty and getting involved at every stage of the process: digging, planting, mulching and watering their new trees.
As part of the project, each class has been now given a tree of their own to look after in the coming years. The students told us that they’re most looking forward to watching their trees grow and finding out about the sorts of birds and insects that will be attracted to the new habitat they’ve created. And, most excitingly of all, in a year or two, the students will be able to harvest their very own fruit.
Amanda Beadle, Pupil Well-being Manager told us “It really was a whole school project and one that every pupil can be involved with in the future. What we have been able to create is a unique environment that will provide a legacy for learning, producing fruit for our pupils and a habitat that offers shelters for pollinators and other species.”
It was wonderful to see the children learning and having so much fun and we couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone who donated to our crowdfunding campaign and those who donated their time and expertise in bringing this project to life!
