With the New Year well and truly upon us, we’ve been taking stock of how our initiatives at TreeAction UK fit in with national and international sustainability targets and aspirations. Read on to find out how our work aligns directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Educational outreach is a pillar of our work as we aim to foster environmental awareness in younger generations. We partner with schools, using hands-on tree planting activities to educate students about climate change, ecosystem health, and environmental responsibility. These experiential learning opportunities help students grasp the importance of ecological preservation and give them life skills such as teamwork and problem-solving.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
As well as our focus on schools and the younger generation, we also develop projects on planting trees on public land. Air pollution now extends beyond urban areas as towns in certain parts of the world have poorer air quality than cities, according to a 2019 study from the UN. Combine that with the fact that three in four cities have less than 20% of their area dedicated to public spaces, and it’s clear that there is a need for more trees. Our efforts on school grounds and public land helps reforest areas that desperately need it.
We seek to address climate change by implementing tree-planting projects that significantly contribute to reducing atmospheric CO₂ levels. Each tree planted acts as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide and effectively reducing regional carbon footprints. Planting projects in schools and urban areas help offset local emissions and create awareness of climate action within the community. These projects mitigate greenhouse gases and promote long-term environmental resilience.
We work hard with our partners at the council to restore local biodiversity and strengthen ecosystems by planting trees in degraded and urbanized areas. We know that escalating forest loss, land degradation, and species extinction all pose severe threats to people and the planet. Trees provide essential habitats for various species, preserve soil quality, and stabilize water cycles, which are essential components for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Our long-term approach ensures that our trees are maintained to maturity and contribute to the environment by supporting natural habitats.
Corporate and Community Partnerships
Our partnerships with businesses, schools, and local councils amplify our impact and engagement, creating a network of stakeholders committed to environmental resilience. Corporations can sponsor projects, helping meet their corporate social responsibility goals while contributing positively to the community and environment. Supporters have included Aviva Community Fund, Co-Op, Waitrose, Worthing Yoga, and many more.
